Blackjack is the most popular and most played casino game in the world. The game involves skill in addition to chance and the fact that you can calculate advantages based on the ratio of high cards to low cards.

The game started in France around 1700 and it was popularly known as vingt-et-un meaning twenty one. When the game was introduced in the USA it was not popular so casinos offered many payouts to lure players. These payouts included ones like the 10 to 1 payout if the players hand had an ace of spades and a black jack either that of clubs or spades.
This was called the black jack and this is where the name of the game came from.

Today the blackjack may not necessarily contain a jack or any black cards. Today the hand with the highest total wins as long as it does not exceed 21. A hand that is more than 21 is called a “bust”. Cards 2 to 10 have their face values, face cards are worth 10, an ace is worth 11 unless it is to cause a bust then it is worth 1. A player gets what is known as a soft hand when his hand has an ace and it has been counted as 11 so he/she cannot be busted if another card is drawn.

Each player plays with the goal to achieve the highest unbusted hand. A bust by either the player or the dealer means you lose. When the player gets the same total as the dealer this is a draw and it is called a “push”, and no one is a winner. The dealer plays independently with each player, thus making it possible for the dealer to lose to one player and win against the other players in the same round of the game.

The game has a minimum/maximum bet that is shown by a sign on the table, this however varies from table to table. After bets are placed the dealer deals the cards from hand held decks and gives two cards to each player including himself/herself. If the dealer gets a blackjack then all the players lose except those that also have a blackjack and they force the game to a push. An ace and a 10 give a total of 21 and this is called a blackjack, this allows the player to be paid 3:2 on their bet.
